The world’s a big place, but there are a few universal human experiences we all share: birth, love, and hangovers. If you’ve been avoiding a night out for fear of the morning after, not to worry – we’ve rounded up a few hangover cures from around the globe that may (or may not) take care of that.

Almost all of the methods we came across involved eating or drinking. This makes a lot of sense, since your headache and nausea are telling you that your body needs to replenish nutrients and hydration.

Canadian Poutine

If you gave me a choice, I’d definitely go for the yummier of the items on the hangover menu – namely the English breakfast (bacon, sausages, eggs, and black pudding – sausage made of blood), or Canadian poutine (fries, cheese curds and gravy).

From there things get a bit fishy – quite literally.

Peruvian Tiger’s Milk

If you wake up with a hangover in Peru, they might offer you tiger’s milk, which is a cocktail of coriander, lime juice, onion, garlic, chillies, salt, pepper, and fish. Mmmm, more cocktails.

In Germany, the tried and true hangover cure is the Katerfrühstück, which is simply pickles wrapped in marinated herring. It’s believed that both dishes contain energising electrolytes, which may be true, especially in the case of the Katerfrühstück – or at least the pickle.

In Poland, you can skip the fish and just drink the pickle juice.

Lutefisk from Norway

In Norway, you have the choice between chugging heavy cream and eating Lutefisk, which is dried fish and lye. Don’t worry, the fermentation process renders the lye harmless.

Tripe has also emerged in a few spots around the globe as a cure for the morning-afters, namely in Mexico where you’d be served menudo (tripe and chili pepper soup) and Turkey, where you’d also feel better after a bit of tripe soup.

Not hungry? These countries’ cures may work better for you: espresso in Italy, buffalo’s milk in Namibia, and coconut water in Bangladesh.

If you don’t want to get up and face the music, you can always adopt the hangover cure of the Danes: the Reparationsbajer, which translates to “repair beer.” In other words, they just keep drinking.

If the thought of eating or drinking anything is making your stomach turn, you can always do it the Irish way and have someone bury you up to your neck in river sand.
