“Valar Dohaeris,” which means “all men must serve,” is the traditional High Valyrian reply to “Valar Morghulis,” aka “all men must die.” Fittingly, Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale is Brewery Ommegang’s answer to its previously released Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale, which is coming out of retirement for re-release alongside the new Game of Thrones beer.
In honor of “Arya’s season-long struggles within and around the House of Bloack and White,” both beers will be released across the country on October 10th. They’ll be on draft in bars that are rad enough to carry such things and released as single bottles and as a collectable combo pack with a commemorative glass (which you can regift to someone who’s not as cool as you, since you already have your AleHorn).
Valar Dohaeris is brewed using wheat, oats, pils, flaked barley, and is hopped with noble hops. Flavor notes describe it as beginning with “a bright sweetness thanks to the Belgian candi sugar used in brewing. The finish is moderately dry and effervescent with just a hint of Belgian yeast character.”
Thoughout its brand partnership with HBO, Brewery Ommegang has previously released six other GoT themed beers, including Iron Throne, Fire and Blood, Take the Black Stout, Seven Kingdoms, and Three-Eyed Raven.
Maybe avoid drinking Three-Eyed Raven around any trees with faces – the combo might end up screwing up everything.
What’s a Tripel Ale?
The word “tripel” usually refers to a really strong beer, usually a Trappist one. In a tripel, the brewer uses three times the amount of malt (give or take) that a typical Trappist beer would have. They’re bright yellow or gold in color, making them a smidge darker than a typical Pilsener. Normally the triple malting results in a dense, creamy head and a flavor that’s sweet and complex.
